How Failure Led Me to Positive Psychology

The story of how I became a Certified Positive Psychology Coach is a story of failure. Failure at managing stress and work/life balance, first as a school psychologist and then as a stay-at-home mom.

In my 20s, I worked as a school psychologist and fiercely cared about my students. I worked long hours, slept poorly, and frequently thought about my students after work … and after about five years, I was burnt out.

I chose to leave my job and start a family with my husband. Two years later, I had two beautiful daughters and returned to the cycle. I worked long hours, slept poorly, and constantly thought about my children’s needs.

I burned out again, but this time quitting wasn’t an option. I had to learn how to take care of my own needs while taking care of my children. I didn’t want to be stuck in this cycle. I wanted to build a balanced life as a mom with meaningful work. Does this sound like you or your clients?

During my journey to learn self-care, I discovered WBI’s Certificate in Wholebeing Positive Psychology course, and connected with others seeking more balance and ease in their lives. Positive psychology provided me an abundance of tools to build a balanced life, such as savoring positive emotions, using character strengths, and activating self-compassion.

Developing a self-compassion practice shifted my perspective and inspired me to facilitate personal renewal groups for mothers. Sharing positive psychology tools with other mothers was meaningful. Witnessing their changes was powerful, and I wanted to increase my opportunities to do this.

I returned to WBI for Positive Psychology Coaching Certification, so I could continue this work and ultimately realize my dream of creating a balanced life with meaningful work. Today I have the privilege of being a faculty member for WBI’s coaching courses, including Positive Psychology Coaching Fundamentals, the first step in the journey to certification.

I still fail sometimes at work/life balance, but I know how to pick myself up now. I offer myself kindness when I encounter difficulty. I gain support and inspiration from the WBI community of people practicing Positive Psychology Coaching. Are you ready to join this community and create your own success story?

Learn more about Positive Psychology Coaching Fundamentals, which connects a wealth of positive psychology research to the practical skills students can use to help clients, colleagues, and others successfully make positive changes in their lives, work, health, and relationships.
